Darwin, Genesis and Creation

Over 150 years and Charles Darwin's assertion that evolution accounts for origins still generates controversy. With television polemics and loud protestations it seems that this topic generates more heat than light. With regard to another dispute Paul says "each one should be fully convinced in his own mind" (Rom 14:5) yet where are we to gather the basis for our decision?
We may begin by listening to wise and learned men and here we have a good opportunity because the local Anglican churches have arranged for Revd Dr Ernest Lucas of Bristol Bible College to speak on the topic of "Darwin, Genesis and Creation".

Dr Lucas is well qualified to do so because he started out as a chemist with an MA from Oxford and a PhD from Kent before doing post-doctoral research in biochemistry in the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Oxford University.
He then studied theology at Oxford, and, after being ordained, he was minister of Baptist churches in Durham City and Liverpool. He then took a PhD in Oriental Studies from Liverpool University.
Dr Lucas is presently Vice-Principal and Tutor in Biblical Studies at Bristol Baptist College (an affiliated college of Bristol University).
Amongst other well informed and challenging books he has published "Can We Believe Genesis Today?" (IVP, 2001) in which he writes on page 100:
"It is argued that the more closely one looks at Genesis 1 in the light of the religious ideas with which the Hebrews had to do battle, the clearer it is that the meaning of the Genesis passage is essentially theological, not scientific. It deals with the questions which theology asks, not those which science asks. Those theological questions are just as relevant today as they were 3,000 years ago. They are more important than the scientific questions, since they go to the heart of the meaning and purpose of the universe in a way that science cannot"
